Isle of Wight morris dancers seek new recruits

The Isle of Wight's morris dancing side is looking to add some younger members to its ranks.

Recent years have seen the Men of Wight Morris Men decline in number to just 16, with each of the dancers now aged between 55 and 60 years old, BBC News reports.

Member of the side Steve Baker said recruiting younger people will help to preserve an important part of the Isle of Wight's culture and heritage.

"We need some youngsters to show us how things should move forward," he told the news provider.

"They need to be fit, enthusiastic, fun and committed, with good camaraderie."

The history of morris dancing on the Isle of Wight dates back to 1700, when dancers led a procession through the streets on Plough Monday.

Based in Newport, the Men of Wight team was formed in 1970 and performs on Thursday evenings between May and September.

The group is hosting two open evenings this month in an attempt to attract new members.
