Isle of Wight historic trains to be preserved thanks to grant

A collection of historic locomotives and carriages in the Isle of Wight has had its future safeguarded by a new grant award.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is to provide £35,000 towards the development of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's Changing Trains project, which will help to guarantee the historic trains are kept under cover while not on display to the public, reports Ventnor Blog.

It means that the collection of steam locomotives and Victorian and Edwardian carriages will be protected from damage from the elements and represents the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's largest project in 20 years.

Having passed the first round, the railway will now have up to two years to apply for a full grant of £929,600 from HLF to fund the scheme.

Isle of Wight Steam Railway chairman Steve Oates said: "We will be able to ... give visitors the opportunity to view historic railway vehicles at close quarters and discover how they were once so much a part of life on the island."

Earlier this month, the railway announced it will be holding special trips on April 3rd 2011 to allow families to mark Mothering Sunday in style.
