Isle of Wight gets broadband boost

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays will be able to access faster broadband speeds as a result of an announcement by BT.

Some 4,000 homes and businesses in Ventnor are expected to benefit from the move by the company, which is expanding its offerings across the south of the UK.

John Weaver, BT’s south east regional director, stated the faster broadband rollout by the company is running at a "rapid" pace, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

"At a time of economic uncertainty, these major improvements will provide a big boost for local businesses and offer many additional educational and entertainment opportunities for households," he said.

Leader of the Isle of Wight Council David Pugh welcomed the announcement from BT that it is to rollout faster broadband on the Isle of Wight.

He explained residents and business owners - as well as those on Isle of Wight holidays - will be able to benefit from the increased internet speeds on offer in Ventnor.

Mr Pugh pointed out the local authority has already revealed it will be spending £3 million on improvements to the island's broadband infrastructure in the coming months in order to ensure broadband speeds are quickened across the Isle of Wight.

BT were urged to extend their own investment in the island to other locations such as Sandown Bay by the council leader, who said this area is crucial to the Isle of Wight's economy.

The telecoms giant previously announced it is going to improve the infrastructure in island areas such as Newport and Ryde over the course of the next few years.

Deputy leader of the Isle of Wight Council George Brown, who also acts as the cabinet member responsible for the economy, stated this is good news for the Isle of Wight.
