Isle of Wight beaches recognised for cleanliness

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has praised a number of beaches on the Isle of Wight in its latest Good Beach Guide.

Thousands of people are expected to be heading on Isle of Wight holidays this summer and they will have a choice of some of the best beaches in the UK to visit.

According to the MCS, it is great for tourism on the Isle of Wight that so many of its locations have won praise for the quality of their water.

Beaches at Shanklin, Ventnor, Totland Bay, Gurnard, Colwell Bay, Sandown, Sandown-Yaverland, St Helens, Compton Bay and Seagrove were all given the top rating for water quality by the MCS, while Cowes, Ryde and Bembridge met minimum standards and Whitecliff Bay came up to guidelines.

"It's nice to see so many IW beaches in the Good Beach Guide, it’s great for tourism and should help attract people to the south coast," Rachel Wyatt, coastal pollution officer for the MCS, was quoted as saying by the Isle of Wight County Press.

The ten beaches singled out by the publication were all rated as excellent, so tourists searching for a destination to go on a vacation this year could be tempted to book Isle of Wight holidays.

Many of them were also recommended by the guide when it was released in 2011, indicating they have been among the best beaches in the UK for a number of years.

Music lovers heading to the Isle of Wight Festival this summer can spend some time on the event's very own beach which will be set up in Seaclose Park in Newport for the weekend.

According to a report on the Isle of Wight Festival by UK Festival Guides, it is a "beautiful" setting for an event, with headliners this year including Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Pearl Jam and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
