Islander looks back on 2013

An Isle of Wight resident has been looking back on her favourite things from 2013, which could provide inspiration for your own visit to the island in 2014.

Writing for On The Wight, Wendy Varley said "it's easy to forget what a wonderful island we live on and how much it has to offer".

One of her favourite things to do with her children over the past year has been to take the Dinosaur Island App Trail, which requires a smartphone to trigger interactive experiences at six meteorite sites dotted around the Isle of Wight.

The island is something of a hotbed of paleontology, with numerous incredible fossils having been discovered here over the years. This February, a series of new dinosaur-themed walks have been announced by Dinosaur Isle, the island's prehistoric museum.

Ms Varley was also particularly impressed by the Isle of Wight's music offering in 2013, with the annual Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival events the two highlights of the calendar.

Both of these events will be back again this year, with a number of huge names already announced, including Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris at the Isle of Wight Festival in June, while Bestival's rumoured line-up includes The Wonder Stuff.

However, the island also plays host to less well-known but no less talented musicians throughout the year. Ms Varley is particularly fond of the Isle of Wight Youth Concert Band.

"The quality of the arts in many of our schools and out-of-school clubs continues to be superb," she said.

If you'd like to see what the island's young musicians can do, you can catch the Youth Concert Band at the Medina Theatre in Newport, where they play on a regular basis.

As well as enjoying yourself, Ms Varley also encouraged people to think about charity. The Isle of Wight regularly hosts fun runs and cycle rides, so why not raise some money for a good cause when you visit the island in 2014?ADNFCR-3083-ID-801679145-ADNFCR
