Island charities benefit from support of inspirational youngster

An inspirational youngster has taken it upon herself to raise a considerable amount of funds for local charities, with 15-year-old Natasha Lambert of Cowes raising £17,000 by sailing around the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight Radio reports Natasha suffers from cerebral palsy and carried out her fundraising drive in September last year, with the youngster now in a position to give all the money she raised to a number of good causes.

Natasha raised £7,328 for both the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and Cowes Lifeboat, as well as raising a further £3,101 for Isle of Wight Scope.

She completed her mammoth sail around the island in 12 hours and 25 minutes, using a specially-designed boat which utilises a sip/puff system to enable her to steer the craft.

Natasha's mum Amanda told the news provider: "Sailing provided these other young people with the same opportunities that Natasha has experienced, including learning new skills, doing something fun and exhilarating and giving them a completely new focus on life, something very special and so important to recover and move forward."

She added that the most important thing for her daughter was to raise money for those causes which meant the most to her.

Individuals keen to get involved with the many nautical events taking place on the Isle of Wight over the coming months might like to head along to the annual Cowes Week, which will be running from August 3rd to 10th.

It is the oldest and largest sailing regatta in the world and regularly draws crowds in excess of 100,000 people.

More than 8,000 competitors will be taking to the waves during the course of the seven-day event, with races covering all manner of classes. In addition, visitors will have the chance to partake in a range of attractions and activities, including the world-famous end-of-festival fireworks display that is sure to leave everyone in a state of awe and excitement.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801578760-ADNFCR
