IOW gearing up for inaugural Acoustic Isle festival

As if the Isle of Wight wasn't already punching above its weight in terms of the quality of its musical offering, this March will see the launch of a brand new festival called Acoustic Isle.

The music event, which is being organised by Visit Isle of Wight, will run from the 13th to the 23rd and feature hundreds of musicians performing a large number of gigs in the island's pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.

By focusing on promoting local artists and intimate island venues, the series of shows over 11 days will be the perfect antithesis to the Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival, which both attract huge crowds to watch internationally-recognised bands.

Gigs already confirmed for Acoustic Isle include Sheffield-born islander David Thornton performing at The Waterfront Inn in Shanklin on March 14th; singer-songwriter Holly Kirby playing at Bertie's Bar in Cowes on the 15th; and West Country-based The Louise Parker Jazz Quartet rocking the Newport Jazz Club on the 16th.

Commenting on the launch of this new event, David Thornton, chief executive of Visit Isle of Wight, told the Island Echo that he hopes putting on a large-scale festival during what is traditionally a quieter time for tourism could attract ferry travel to the island.

"The Isle of Wight is a hotbed of musical talent, and we believe that hosting a music event at this time of the year will give people considering an out-of-season break the extra encouragement they may need to choose us rather than Devon, Cornwall or Dorset," he explained.

In other music news, it has been a great week or so for the organisers of the Isle of Wight Festival, as they've been able to confirm that both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kings of Leon will be headlining the main stage on the Saturday and Sunday respectively. Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro had already been booked for the Friday, along with the DJ Calvin Harris. Travis are another of the British acts set to perform. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801690366-ADNFCR
