Ideas sought for Isle of Wight artwork

The Isle of Wight Council is seeking ideas for a new piece of artwork on the island.

It wants to mark the life of a famous island resident through the artwork and has asked artists to come forward and suggest designs that will be placed on the outside wall on the corner of Newport's Little London Car Park.

John Milne was a world-renowned seismologist who lived in Shide on the Isle of Wight from 1895 until his death in 1913 and is credited as inventing a new type of seismograph - known as the horizontal pendulum seismograph - while he was working in Japan.

The Isle of Wight Council is searching for designs to take pride of place on the building, with three enamel panels expected to make up the artwork.

Artists with ideas have been reminded they need to come forward by May 18th and make their proposals to the Isle of Wight Council, while the winner will receive a commissioning fee of £2,500 from the local authority.

The island is a hotbed for art and many locally-based artists recently took part in a free event to mark the Isle of Arts Festival that took place on the Isle of Wight last weekend.

"A panel will shortlist three designs which will then go to a public vote in the summer. The most popular following this vote will be produced on enamel at Island firm AJ Wells and Sons," said a statement from the Isle of Wight Council.

Milne was also a keen photographer and those on Isle of Wight holidays are able to see some of his work at Carisbrooke Castle's museum.

The location - which is more than 800 years old -  is one of the most popular places on the island for tourists as it was where King Charles I was imprisoned.
