History society talks ancient Greek period

The Isle of Wight might seem rather far removed from ancient Greece, but those anxious to feel a little closer to the great society are welcome to attend a Vectis Decorative and Fine Arts Society discussion on the topic taking place at the Medina Theatre in Newport on February 20th.

Certainly one for the history buffs as well as those with a general interest in exploring other cultures, the talk will cover the ambiguous response to the Greek art of the Hellenistic period between Alexander the Great and Cleopatra.

Attempting to answer the question of whether the period could be considered the pinnacle of Greek achievement, or represents the artistic expression of a decaying culture that is well past its prime.

Leading the talk will be established academic and classics tutor for Oxford University Department for Continuing Education Dr Stephen Kershaw, who will be inviting audience members to contribute their views on this highly controversial time in human history.

His Brief Guide to the Greek Myths, published in 2007, has been praised by the BBC History magazine for being "eminently sane, highly informative, and reasonably priced".

Attendees to the discussion will find the doors open at 7:15pm with the actual talk beginning at 8pm. Tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages will be available beforehand.

Discussion is expected to be wrapped up by 9:30pm and guests will be charged £7 each, with concessions of £2 available for students.

History enthusiasts wishing to get their fill during their time on the island are advised to visit any number of the attractions exhibiting the ingenuity of the past, including Carisbrooke Castle, Alum Bay and Osborne House.

The Isle has a rich and exciting culture of history that includes dinosaurs, aristocracy and monarchy, so make sure you don't miss out.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801683134-ADNFCR
