Enjoy great walks around the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has a number of amazing walking routes for you to explore if you're looking for a more active visit to the island. There are hundreds of miles of pathways to follow around the island, all of which are surrounded by beautiful scenery. Whether you're looking for fresh coastal walks are exciting forest trails, the Isle of Wight is likely to have just the sort of walk you're looking for. Below are some of the best ones:

Tennyson Down

One of the best is the scenic route along Tennyson Down, a whale-backed ridge that rises high above sea level in the west of the island.

Situated close to Totland, is is named after the famous poet Lord Tennyson, who spent four decades living close by to the hill at Farringford House, and would walk along the ridge almost every day while contemplating life and the arts.

The hill extends approximately three miles and stretches all the way to The Needles. It also serves as part of the Tennyson Heritage Coast and is inside the Isle of Wight's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With such plaudits to its name, you won't be surprised to discover amazing views of the island as you follow this route. You'll also be able to look down upon Freshwater Bay and visit the Tennyson Monument, which stands proudly overlooking the Western coast. This is a great place for a picnic and possibly even a poetry reading or two with lunch.

Coastal Path

Not so much a single walk as a series of interconnected routes, the Coastal Path wraps around the island and stretches nearly 70 miles in total. Even as the nights draw in and the seasons turn, it's a fantastic experience walking along the route and strolling along beaches that take on a stark and exquisite beauty during the winter.

The other great thing about this path is that the majority of it comprises mild ascents meaning that it's suitable for most walkers.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801653073-ADNFCR
