Dinosaur footprints found on Isle of Wight beach

A palaeontologist has announced that he has found dinosaur footprints on the Isle of Wight.

Prints from an adult iguanodon, a theropod and a baby iguanodon-like dinosaur were discovered by Dr Steve Sweetman at Brook Bay and they are thought to be around 130 million years old.

Speaking to BBC News, he said: "It is a remarkable fossil providing tantalising evidence of the existence of animals for which we have the merest scraps of bones."

Dr Sweetman, a vertebrate palaeontologist at the University of Portsmouth, explained that while many fossils have been found on the Isle of Wight, it is "extraordinary" to have uncovered a three-in-one specimen such as the one he saw in a 50kg rock.

Isle of Wight holidays could therefore become increasingly popular among people hunting dinosaur bones, with the island's Dinosaur Isle attraction likely to be one of the places they head to.

The venue is open from 10:00 to 18:00 BST throughout the summer.
