Cowes to benefit from new marina facilities

The Isle of Wight is set to get new marina facilities after proposals for an expansion of the Cowes Harbour Commission's Sugar Store warehouse at its Shepards Wharf site were given the green light.

As a result of the decision, facilities for yachtsmen visiting the Isle of Wight sailing hub are to be improved, while businesses will also be able to be housed in the marine section.

Harbour master and chief executive of the commission Stuart McIntosh explained the move marks the commitment the organisation has to Cowes and the Isle of Wight.

"Developing the Sugar Store will improve facilities at Shepards Wharf Marina, whilst creating new business opportunities. This should benefit both the marina users and the local economy," he said, adding the area has been through something of a resurgence in the last few years.

Mr McIntosh noted: "It is fast becoming an important commercial hub in this part of Cowes and the Solent region."

The new buildings will be close to a conservation area, so the design has been carefully put together to ensure it does not clash with the surrounding environment.

Prospective commercial operators are now being urged to come forward with their ideas for the facility, with a number of sites available for firms at the location.

It was noted the marina at Cowes is quickly becoming one of the most important places on the island for the Isle of Wight's economy, as well as being a popular place for tourists to visit.

Those on Isle of Wight holidays who head to Cowes during their break on the island may also wish to spend some time on the town's high street, which boasts a wide range of shops.

Osborne House is situated in East Cowes and is a popular place to visit for tourists on the island, due to the fact it was previously a favourite vacation destination of Queen Victoria.
