Construction work to start on new Isle of Wight school

The groundbreaking ceremony for a new school on the Isle of Wight will take place tomorrow (November 19th 2010), with a local councillor suggesting it will be among the most environmentally-friendly educational establishments in the UK.

David Pugh, leader of the Isle of Wight Council, is scheduled to break the ground at 11:00 GMT and he described it as a very exciting day for all involved.

The £30 million secondary school in Cowes will feature a floodlit sports pitch, outdoor amphitheatre and a green gym.

Mr Pugh said: "The facility is one of the key parts of the school reorganisation and will be one of the most modern and environmentally-friendly educational facilities in the whole country."

It will feature a biomass energy plant that will provide heating and hot water to the school, with a nature reserve planned for the roof.

The local authority recently announced that its plans to move to a two-tier system have progressed significantly and it is only waiting for a proposal from Chale Primary before moving forward.
