Bear Grylls backs plan to save Isle of Wight harbour

Television star Bear Grylls has got behind a plan to save a harbour on the Isle of Wight.

The presenter and survival expert has given his backing to proposals from a trust set up to protect the future of Bembridge Harbour.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, chairman Michael MacInnes recently spoke in front of a packed crowd at Bembridge Village Hall.

Mr MacInnes stated the "first meeting will be followed by a series staged in St Helens, Brading, Nettlestone and Seaview to cement support for the bid", the newspaper noted.

Some £1 million is needed by the trust in order to save Bembridge Harbour, with about half of this sum required for the repairs and dredging at the location.

During the reign of Charles I, Bembridge Harbour was the Isle of Wight's main port, so it has a long and proud history, while the man-made section was built in the late 19th century.
