Artists confirmed for Newport Jazz Weekend

The final line-up for this year's Newport Jazz Weekend has been confirmed by the event's organisers, with concerts to take place from July 19th to 21st.

Launching in 2013 with the 'Best of British Jazz Legends' concert at Quay Arts on the 19th, the show will feature pianist Keith Ingham, accompanied by Digby Fairweather on cornet, Roy Williams on trombone and Dave Shepherd on clarinet.

Other highlights of the upcoming festival are to include a Tribute to George Shearing at the Apollo Theatre on Saturday - featuring Paul Sawtell on vibraphone, Craig Milverton on piano, bass by Sandy Suchodolski and Nick Millward on drums.

Sunday will see performances by The Unity Stompers and Amy Roberts at Newport Minster, while the Riverside Centre will host Sax Appeal - a UK-based jazz band led by Derek Nash.

Sax Appeal formed in Manchester in 1980 and are a mainstay of the British jazz scene. Usually comprising five saxophonists and a bass guitarist, a number of instruments are interchangeable within the band, meaning they provide an array of jazz styles and entertainment for the crowds.

Alex Barnes (saxophone) and Martin Taylor (guitar) will draw the festival to a close on Sunday evening at the Riverside Centre.

The committee of the Jazz Weekend have responsibility for picking and approaching the acts each year and is made up of retired Radar engineer Bill Wills, Newport-based solicitor and event director Jim Thorn, semi-retired professional musician Tim Marshall, jazz enthusiast Willie Sanderson, Newport Jazz Club secretary Jean Toyne and event founder Mike Whitehead.

Meanwhile, acclaimed pianist Peter Donohue is set to perform at the West Wight Arts Association next month, with the renowned musician's playlist to include Chopin's Sonata no 3 in B minor Op 58 and Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues numbers one to four, among others.

Kicking off at 19:30 GMT on February 23rd, tickets for the show are still available and are on sale from Totland Parish Office.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801530846-ADNFCR
