3D project to showcase dinosaur fossils

A new project has been launched to capture the image of fossils collected across the Isle of Wight in spectacular 3D and showcase them across the globe.

Scientists from the British Geological Survey have been working with the curators of Isle of Wight attraction Dinosaur Isle to catalogue 30 'type fossils' in order to upload them online for those who are unable to visit the centre to enjoy.

Type fossils are those that are the first of their kind to be discovered and are used to determine the species of similar fossil finds in the future, with the Isle of Wight offering an abundant supply of these important relics over the years.

Shirley Smart, the Isle of Wight Council's cabinet member responsible for tourism, commented: "The Isle of Wight is well known as being the dinosaur capital of Europe and there have been many significant prehistoric finds made here over the decades.

"It is wonderful to know that dozens of fossils on display in Dinosaur Isle can now be viewed all in one place from across the globe."

Dinosaur Isle opened in 2001 at a cost of £2.7 million - half of which was provided by the Millennium Commission - and has wowed crowds ever since with its interactive and innovative take on the world of archaeology.

Guests are able to examine actual specimens of real-life dinosaurs, while also talking part in workshops and seminars to find out more about this fascinating field.

Peter Pusey, Dinosaur Isle's general manager, concluded the Isle of Wight is one of the important places on the planet for finding fossil remains, with visitors able to literally walk around the island and dig up a piece of history.

Open seven days a week all year round and daily between 10:00 and 16:00 to 18:00 depending on the seasons, admission costs £5 for an adult day pass and £3.70 for children aged three to 15, while kids under three can get in for free.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801632559-ADNFCR
