Shrove Tuesday Pancake Races

Wed 29 Jan 2014

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Races

Shrove Tuesday is well on its way, and this day of indulgence before Lent commences has never been more enjoyable - largely thanks to the traditional consumption of everyone's favourite buttery battery treat.

Yes, pancakes will be eaten across the nation, and the Isle of Wight is no exception. There's plenty going on during the day and the evening to warrant a trip over to this stunning part of the country.

Check out some of these exciting events and activities that you could be partaking in on this special day, and see if you're inspired to book yourself a ferry for March 4th.

Pancake races

The traditional pancake race is, of course, something of a hallmark when it comes to Shrove Tuesday. As well as consuming them, it's worth working up an appetite before you dive in. The locals gather in Yarmouth to hold theirs annually, resulting in a great community atmosphere and an exciting event all around. There is fancy dress and everyone is welcome to participate providing they bring their own frying pan. Pancakes will be provided and there is generally music to enjoy.

As Shrove Tuesday is technically a religious holiday, it may be worth popping down to your local place of worship and enjoying the singing of songs and the magnificent architecture these buildings provide. Where you want to go may depend on your religion, but Cowes, Newport and Shanklin all have welcoming establishments to suit everyone.

Eating the pancakes

Finally, the most important part of the day - eating the pancakes. Take a walk along the beautiful coastline and seek out the local creperie in Shanklin or Cowes. Ask for your favourite topping - remember, the classics are the best - and then sit on a bench overlooking the sea, enjoying the sound of the waves. Bliss.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801687980-ADNFCR
