Les Routiers names Isle of Wight restaurant its top choice

Travel consumer guide Les Routiers has named Mojac's a la carte restaurant in Shooters Hill, Cowes as its Restaurant of the Year 2013.

Opened in 2000, this latest award is not the first accolade for the establishment, which was named among the Good Food Guide Readers' Recommendation list in 2010, as well as taking home the Best Dessert Award for 2009/10 and 2010/11 in the Wight Good Food Guide.

It is, however, welcome recognition for the efforts of the restaurant's owners and its staff to make the experience of the dining public that much more pleasurable in a time of austerity.

Owner Mark Baldwin told the Isle of Wight County Press: "The award is like the feather on the cap really. To enter the competition, you have to be nominated and inspected by an undercover guest."

His wife Emma added: "I think I am still in shock. The recognition is great and we will continue the business for as long as we can."

Covering a range of hospitality businesses - including hotels and guest houses, B&Bs, restaurants, bistros, pubs, inns, cafes and tearooms - Les Routiers' annual The Guide publication aims to highlight those establishments which take customer service and quality produce to the next level.

A spokesperson for Les Routiers commented: "This year has been so competitive.

"We've had such good feedback from the many fans of our nominees, together with outstanding performance by all, that made the judging process this year one of the toughest we've ever encountered."

The menu at Mojac's is updated regularly and offers an array of mouth-watering dishes for patrons, including its slowly cooked beef on stilton mash with roasted carrots and parsnips and a red wine sauce and duo of duck, pan fried breast and slowly cooked leg of duck topped with honey parsnips served on a puree of butternut squash with orange gravy.

The Guide describes the eatery as a friendly, family-run restaurant seating 50 covers and delivering "fantastic, first class food" in charming, traditional surroundings.

It concludes: "When visiting Cowes, whether it be for a short stop on the Marina or a longer stay on the island, a visit to Mojac's for lunch or dinner is a must!"

First seen in Paris in 1935, the iconic Les Routiers emblem has become synonymous with fine dining, warm hospitality and excellent service. It is bestowed only on those establishments which have a unique and distinct offering and atmosphere, with Mojac's now joining an illustrious list of contemporaries who can boast this award.

One of the key prerequisites of the honour is a focus on the use of seasonal, local produce, while offering an individual selling point that diners and guests can find nowhere else.

Guest comments posted by Les Routiers highlight the quality of the dining service at Mojac's, with one patron describing their experience as "absolutely wonderful". So good in fact, that they returned the following night to eat there again.

Following the announcement of the eatery's victory this month, Mr Baldwin added: "When we were nominated for this, I told Helen it wouldn't happen to us. But then it did. It was unbelievable."

Mojac's is open Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 14:00 GMT for lunchtime diners and again from 17:45 until late for those wishing to dine out in the evening. It serves last orders for drinks at 22:00 and its meals are reasonably priced. Starters begin at £4.95, mains are from £12.95 and desserts start at £5.25.

Other award winners of Les Routiers' coveted emblem so far this year include the Blackcock Country Inn & Restaurant in Falstone, Northumberland and Guest House of the Year 2013 The Spendthrift Guest House in Anstruther, Scotland.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801531804-ADNFCR
