Jay Rayner to highlight Isle of Wight foodie culture

Respected food critic and the BBC's One Show presenter Jay Rayner is set to hold a talk on his latest book Greedy Man in a Hungry World as part of Quay Arts' Lost at Sea event.

He will be addressing interested foodies at the Little Gloster Restaurant & Bar on the Isle of Wight on September 3rd, with guests able to book a ticket for £60, which will include a five-course dinner and drinks on arrival.

A specially-prepared 'taste the difference' menu will also be put on for all those heading along, which aims to showcase the myriad differences between supermarket, locally-grown, organic, foraged and mass market foods.

The food writer told the Isle of Wight County Press his latest publication tackles the growing issues of globalism, organic food and GM crops and aims to bring to light some of the misconceptions about these three key aspects of the global food chain.

An excerpt from his new book states: "The doctrine of local food is dead and farmers markets are merely a lifestyle choice for the affluent middle classes."

It is perhaps slightly heavy going for avid food lovers who have been told for years the best way to get fine produce is to source locally and organically, but this is a stance Mr Rayner is keen to shed greater light on.

A combination of "hard-nosed reporting and memoirs", the book will look at debunking the many myths that have arisen around the culture of food in recent years and promises to be a great night for both lovers of fine cuisine and all those keen to learn more about where their food actually comes from.

Finally, when asked about how to find a good restaurant, Mr Rayner advised readers of the Isle of Wight County Press: "Look for simple menus and simple food. If the waiter has to kneel down by your table to explain the 'concept' of the menu, it is time to get up and leave."ADNFCR-3083-ID-801631181-ADNFCR
