Isle of Wight pub 'has genuinely happy atmosphere'

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays may wish to check out a pub which has been praised for its happy atmosphere and listed as one of the UK's best in a new publication.

According to the 2012 Good Pub Guide, the best location of its type on the island is the New Inn, which is located in Shalfleet.

It pointed out that while the building dates back to the 18th century, it has gone from strength to strength in recent times, leading to it being named the Isle of Wight Dining Pub of the Year.

The pub was praised for its "great seafood" and "well-kept beer" along with a range of other outstanding factors that make it a must-see venue for those on Isle of Wight holidays.

"Its rambling rooms have plenty of character with warm fires, yachting photographs and pictures, boarded ceilings and scrubbed pine tables on flagstone, carpet and slate floors," said the guide.

It was also pointed out that more than 60 wines are in stock at the location, while the ales available for those who visit include local firm Goddards Fuggle-Dee-Dum and Sharps Doomba.

The guide explained to those considering heading to the venue that it is always busy so they will need to book a table in order to ensure they are not left disappointed.

It also noted there are sometimes double sittings during the busy summer months, so tourists should be aware of this before they elect to head to the New Inn for a meal on their break.

The award is the latest accolade for the popular eatery, which has been named the Isle of Wight Dining Pub of the Year in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Its menu includes food such as fish pie, gammon, egg and chips, prime steaks, omelettes, baguettes and the speciality of a range of seafood.
