Isle of Wight named among top picnic locations

The results of a new poll could result in an upturn in the number of people booking Isle of Wight holidays, with a location on the island named among the best in the UK.

According to research conducted by concessions website OscarUK.co.uk, Tennyson Down is in the top ten places in the country to go for a picnic.

Peter Simpson, managing director at OscarUK, explained there are few things in life more exciting than packing up a picnic hamper and heading out into the countryside for an al fresco meal, reports Isle of Wight Radio.

"The over-50s are going back to the secret seven adventures of their childhood, filling a hamper with food and lashings of ginger beer to head out with friends and family for a traditional day out," he said, adding "a lake, on the beach, in the countryside or even your own back garden" could be great locations in which to enjoy the perfect picnic.

Kew Gardens in London came out on top in the research by the website, but there was a strong showing by Tennyson Down on the Isle of Wight, which finished in eighth place in the top ten after collecting 27 per cent of the votes of those who took part.

Loch Lomond in Scotland was in second spot in the results of the survey, with the top three rounded off by Malham Cove, which is located in the Yorkshire Dales.

Those heading on Isle of Wight holidays in the coming weeks and months who would prefer to have someone else preparing their food for them might wish to go to the Ventnor Botanic Garden cafe to enjoy a meal by the venue's new chef Martyn Cutler.

The Isle of Wight County Press reported that the kitchen is set to use as many locally-grown ingredients as possible when crafting its menu.
