Isle of Wight food on menu at Olympic Games

Tomatoes and potatoes grown on the Isle of Wight are going to be on the menu for those heading to the Olympic Games in London later in the month.

The Olympic torch was on the Isle of Wight last weekend as part of a full UK tour to lead up to the start of the Games on July 27th and it was revealed British produce is being used by the chefs in East London wherever it is possible to do so.

Chef Angela Hartnett, who will be providing corporate meals and canapes during the Olympics, told BBC Radio 4's Food Programme: "What we have been given instructions for, which is great and we would have gone there anyway, is buying British. There's a tapas menu, for instance, but it's British tapas, so it would be Trealy Farm Charcuterie, beautiful Isle of Wight tomatoes and the equivalent of Manchego cheese."

According to a report by VentnorBlog, potatoes grown on the Isle of Wight are also likely to be on the menu at the Olympic Games, as hundreds of tonnes of the vegetables are sold to McCains by Isle of Wight farmer John Knox each year.

The company provides the Shepody potatoes to McDonald's, which are used to make their famous fries and are the only chips that will be available in the Olympic site.

Earlier in the summer, the fast-food chain, which is one of the biggest companies in the world, unveiled the massive restaurant it is opening in Stratford for the Games.

One customer could even be the defending Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt, who famously revealed he ate chicken nuggets ahead of breaking the world record in Beijing four years ago.

The Isle of Wight could be the ideal place to get away for a short while during the Olympics, as it is only a couple of hours away from the capital city.
