Isle of Wight beer to be launched in September

Visitors on Isle of Wight holidays later this summer will be able to sample a beer made from island-grown hops.

The Isle of Wight was previously one of the biggest areas for growing hops in the UK, but production lapsed in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

However, Ventnor Botanic Garden is now growing hops once more, in order to create the Isle of Wight beer Hoppiness, which is expected to be available for a limited time only.

The launch weekend is set to take place at the end of September, so those who are planning Isle of Wight holidays may wish to time their trip to the island to coincide with the event.

George Brown, Isle of Wight Council deputy leader and cabinet member for the economy, said: "Any further means of reducing the national carbon footprint by not carrying ingredients across the Solent must be welcomed."

Numerous beers are produced by Isle of Wight-based brewery Goddard's, including Inspiration, Iron Horse and Ale of Wight.
