Celebrating St Patrick's Day on the IOW

Although saints' days are usually celebrated by patriotic types, St Patrick's Day is one particular event that brings people together all over the world, regardless of their heritage.

With the emphasis on having a good time with your friends, March 17th is as much about camaraderie as patriotism, and with Irish pubs and expats dotted all around the world, no matter where you are there will be a celebration happening nearby.

The Isle of Wight is no exception, so if you're heading by ferry to the island in March, here are a few ways you can join in the fun:

St Patrick's Day Party

St Patrick's Day wouldn't be the same without Guinness, Ireland's national brew. On a normal day, 5.5 million pints of the black stuff are consumed, but on March 17th, this spikes to 13 million.

Grab a pint yourself or two at the Sun Inn in Hulverstone, which is hosting a St Patrick's Day Party from 7pm until 11pm, with a themed menu and music from The Crew.

Irish Day at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway

A more novel way to celebrate the occasion is by hopping aboard a vintage steam train. On Sunday 16th March, the Isle of Wight Steam Railways kicks off the 2014 season with Irish Day, featuring live music from the band Last Orders and Irish dancing by the Shamrock & Thistles Dance Group.

The railway's refreshment rooms will be serving traditional Irish food throughout the day, plus there'll be the obligatory Guinness available.

Tickets are cheaper if you buy online, with adult fairs priced at £10.50, child tickets at £5.50 and family (two adults and two children) passes at £26.50. Under-5s go free.

Equinox: an evening of music, song, dance and poetry to celebrate the springtime and St Patrick's Day

Everyone will be in good spirits at the Porchfield Village Hall, where a special springtime and St Patrick's Day concert will be taking place on March 15th.

Confirmed acts include Moonshine Morris, Cephalodidge, Guith Singers, 2nd Time Around and Return of the Native, while the menu will feature Irish stew and Guinness.

Tickets are priced at £7.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801692876-ADNFCR
