The Cure's Bestival set 'positively bursting with hits'

Revellers on the Isle of Wight this weekend attending the Bestival music event were treated to a three-hour greatest hits set by headline act The Cure.

According to a four-star review of the festival by the Guardian, the band performed all of their biggest songs, such as Just Like Heaven and Lullaby.

The Cure chose the Isle of Wight bash for their only show in Europe this year so it was bound to be a special occasion.

"A sublime atmospheric opening segment featuring Fascination Street and a brooding Open gives way to a bright-eyed dash through Smith's most upbeat romantic flushes, from the yearning pop of Lovesong and Just Like Heaven, to jubilant rattles through Inbetween Days and Friday, I'm in Love, with Smith whooping stratospheric high notes like he's just found the love of a lifetime," noted critic Mark Beaumont.

He explained how the group - led by Robert Smith - played two encores at the event, running through well-known tracks such as A Forest, One Hundred Years, Disintegration, Close to Me and The Lovecats.

Bestival curator Rob da Bank had previously explained in an interview with the news provider how he has been working on booking The Cure for a number of years through email conversations with Smith.

The Guardian reporter also had praise for a performance by PJ Harvey, who was celebrating being named the winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize for the second time this week, for her album Let England Shake.

Oh Land and Patrick Wolf were also highlighted as being among the highlights of the event, which sold out just a couple of weeks before getting underway.

According to a review of Bestival by the Portsmouth News, fans of The Cure had travelled from as far as Sweden to see them play on the Isle of Wight.

Acts praised by the news provider included Grandmaster Flash, Pendulum and Primal Scream, as well as PJ Harvey.
