Rob da Bank: Bestival was set up to boost music scene

The curator of Bestival on the Isle of Wight has stated one of the reasons he set up the event on the island was to improve the music scene of the local area.

Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank told The Arts Desk that the region where he grew up was "poorly serviced" in terms of local music acts when he was younger.

He explained that when he set up Bestival on the Isle of Wight it was a couple of years after the Isle of Wight Festival had been revived, so the area was open to the idea of similar events.

The organiser told the news provider how he spoke with the owner of venue Robin Hill Country Park, who was keen on the idea of using it as the site for the festival.

He said: "It was a real baptism of fire, though - we didn't know what the hell we were doing and it took a good three years to even get a hang on the basics of what we were doing. The first year was total mayhem, but we got away with it, it was a great festival and we sold 4,000 tickets."

The DJ added that even though it was difficult to get the event up and running in the early days, he still had a lot of fun running it with his wife Josie and they now sell 50,000 tickets a year.

He explained it was a community effort to organise Bestival as Josie ran the bars on the site and he had other friends who helped out with areas such as financing and publicity.

Bestival takes place at Robin Hill Country Park from September 6th to 9th and names such as Sigur Ros, Stevie Wonder, The xx, Hot Chip and Bat For Lashes will play during the weekend.
