Rob da Bank: Bestival feels quite homely

The curator of Bestival on the Isle of Wight has described the event as "homely".

Responding to a query on a live question and answer session run by the Guardian, Rob da Bank stated he uses local crew whenever it is possible to do so.

He explained he lives on the island with his wife Josie for around half of the time, so knows plenty of suppliers who are involved in the delivery of the event each year.

Bestival has grown from small roots into one of the biggest and boldest festivals on the calendar, with tens of thousands of people booking Isle of Wight holidays to attend it each year.

The Radio 1 DJ also gave an insight into the way decisions on Bestival are made, revealing he gets together with a group of friends to form a committee and talks it over.

He informed readers of the inspiration for Bestival on the Isle of Wight as well, adding: "We were massively influenced by Glastonbury, but we had to forge our own thing. You need to hone and develop your ideas."

Responding to a reader who asked how much the headline acts at Bestival cost to book, the curator stated he remembers paying bands around £3,000 to play nine years ago, but admitted it is a "lot of money" to secure acts such as Stevie Wonder, who is headlining the event this year.

Rob da Bank also addressed criticism over the layout of the site of Bestival at Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight, explaining it is difficult to address sound crossing from stage to stage due to the fact it is in a valley.

New Order, Sigur Ros, Friendly Fires, The xx, Soulwax, Justice and Two Door Cinema Club are among the acts set to play at Bestival on the Isle of Wight this summer.
