Bestival 'is awesome' for discovering new bands

Isle of Wight event Bestival has been described as "awesome" for discovering some of the best new bands around.

Douglas Booth - who played Bestival act Boy George in television drama Worried About the Boy - headed to the island in order to report on the festival for GQ.

The Christopher and His Kind actor stated that the smaller tents at Bestival are always packed with crowds intent on discovering the next big thing.

Booth explained how he had a "magical" few days on the Isle of Wight and has already booked his yurt so he is able to attend Bestival again next year.

Some of the acts singled out for praise by the star included a late night set by the electronic group Metronomy, who he said played to one of the biggest audiences he has ever seen at the Isle of Wight festival.

"They lived up to their hype and my expectations - their new album The English Riviera has been playing on my iPod non-stop since it came out," said Booth, who will soon be appearing on the small screen in a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens tale Great Expectations.

He also enjoyed the headline slot by The Cure, who were an exclusive European booking for the curator of the event, the Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank.

Robert Smith's group have been one of the most praised in many of the reviews of Bestival, with a four-star report in the Guardian stating that their set was "positively bursting" with hits.

Writing for the newspaper, Mark Beaumont noted that they played tracks such as Lullaby, Just Like Heaven, Inbetween Days, Lovesong and Friday, I'm In Love over the course of the show.

He highlighted "Smith whooping stratospheric high notes like he's just found the love of a lifetime" as one of the best aspects of the performance.
