Bestival crowd 'makes it unique'

The organiser of the Isle of Wight-based music event Bestival has stated it is the festival's crowd that makes it such a unique occasion of the UK summer season.

According to Radio 1 DJ and curator Rob da Bank, the "magic" happens because of the "amazing" audience, although he pointed out efforts have been made to make the site - which is located at Robin Hill Country Park on the island - "beautiful, eccentric and very welcoming".

Speaking to the Gainsborough Standard, he explained it is the detail that goes into the planning of the event that helps to make it stand out from the crowd of other UK festivals.

"We have tents hand-made in India, we make and paint all of the signs ourselves, we use old-style canvas tents rather than PVC ... to make the site a prettier one," the organiser told the newspaper.

The DJ also spoke about the line-up at this year's event, which features two of the biggest and most exciting names in music in Bjork and The Cure - the latter of whom are an exclusive European booking, while the Icelandic star will be performing her new album at the island event.

"You're getting two of the best back catalogues of any artists I can think of ... and with Bjork a lot of theatre," he said.

It was also promised by the curator there will be yet more surprises for those getting ready for their Isle of Wight holidays to coincide with Bestival, which gets underway on September 8th.

Singles released by The Cure over the course of their long career include Close to You, Boys Don't Cry, The Lovecats, Lullaby, Friday I'm in Love and High.

Other bands on the bill for Bestival this year include The Maccabees, Crystal Castles, Pendulum, Public Enemy and Primal Scream, who will be performing their classic record Screamadelica in its entirety in their show.
