Bestival competition finalists announced

A number of bands, DJs, choirs and spoken word performers from the Isle of Wight have moved one step closer to a place on the bill at this year's Bestival.

Organiser Rob da Bank is running a competition to find the best local talent to appear at his annual festival, which will return to Newport's Robin Hill Country Park from September 5th to 8th.

After sifting through hundreds of entries, the BBC Radio 1 DJ has now announced the finalists of the 2013 Bestival Island Band, DJ, Choir and Spoken Word Competition.

They are due to perform in front of a panel of judges at Northwood House in Cowes next month for the chance to appear at Bestival.

Praising the high standard of entries in this year's contest, Rob da Bank suggested the Isle of Wight music scene appears to be in rude health.

"Once again the bar has been raised, with an epic spread of styles and genres covered," he commented. "Really great bands, some incredible DJs and an inspirational selection of choirs and spoken word wizards."

The finalists in the band category are Lucid, The Omhz, The Bear Social, Hentai Babies and Signals. In the DJ section, Ill Al, Tony Stark, Dub Dynamic, Splosh and DJ Longjack have made it through to the final. The best performing choirs were Quaynote, Wight Harmony and Ryde School Choristers, while Callum Fairweather, Buddy Carson and Lady Robinson reached the final in the spoken word/beatboxer category.

Although the competition was strcitly open only to acts based on the Isle of Wight, the organisers revealed they were forced to turn down an entry from one hopeful musician from Russia.

The final will take place from 07:00 BST at Northwood House on Thursday May 16th. Admission is free.

Once the judges make their decision, the winning acts will join a Bestival line-up that contains the likes of Elton John, MIA, Franz Ferdinand, the Flaming Lips, Jessie Ware, Disclosure and Johnny Marr.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801573774-ADNFCR
