The Pity of War

Mon 31 Mar 2014

May 4th will see St Catherine's Church play host to a unique event that invites a variety of performers to cast their eyes over one of the most turbulent periods of human history - the First World War.

Violinist Matthew Trusler joins forces with internationally renowned pianist Martin Roscoe to provide a stirring soundtrack as stage and screen legend Timothy West reads from the famous poems and letters of Wilfred Owen.

Written between 1917 and 1918, these beautiful pieces of work reveal the moral courage and anguish that comes from war, and West will no doubt do them justice.

The readings are broken up by musical interludes by Trusler and Roscoe, with sonatas by Elgar, Janá?ek and Debussy - all written during the Great War - among the pieces to be performed.

You will also be treated to some classic wartime songs that were once sung by the soldiers to lift one another's spirits and keep moral high. Such tunes were inspiring, easy to remember and often a little bit rude.

The performance is taking place at St Catherine's Church as part of the Isle of Arts Festival and is set to begin at 7:30pm. As it casts fresh eyes over an event that society has fixated on for so long, you can expect demand for tickets to be high. Entry is priced at £19.50.

Musicians Trusler and Roscoe share decades of experience between them, with performances throughout the world including Europe, Australia, the USA, Japan and South Africa with establishments as prestigious as the BBC orchestras, the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham, Halle and Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Timothy West, meanwhile, is noted for his command on classical stage, with definitive portrayals of Lear, Macbeth, Falstaff and Shylock under his belt. He is also a very capable director.
