At the furthest navigable reach of the River Medina, Newport the Island’s capital and major shopping area can be found. The town is bustling and full or character, with a wealth of Georgian and early Victorian architecture. The Quay Arts Centre has displays of local art in its fine galleries and the harbour area is great for a relaxing stroll after exploring the shops.

On the outskirts of Newport is Carisbrooke Castle a Norman fort where Charles 1 was incarcerated. The Castle is in excellent condition and has a museum, which is open all year round.

Parkhurst Forest is located to the north-west of Newport and ishome to the red squirrel offers miles of woodland walks,
