Where to eat

Around The Hambrough Hotel

The Pond CaféThe Pond Café
(01983 855666, thepondcafe.com), a diminutive building seating 24 people at a squeeze, with Scots chefs, French waitresses, modern British food, fine wine and a friendly atmosphere. Haven’t booked ahead for dinner? No chance. Maybe for lunch, which costs £15.50 for two courses and £20 for three, plus wine (dinner is à la carte).

The Tiffin Room (01983 852868, www.thetiffinroom.com), is run by the Indian owner of the Bonchurch Manor on Friday, Saturday nights and Sunday lunchtime only. The food is South Indian, the ambience is cosy and there's a lovely garden for drinks and coffee.

TreatFree Indian desserts for two adults dining in the restaurant.

FULTON’S SEAFOOD AND CHOP HOUSEFULTON’S SEAFOOD AND CHOP HOUSE (01983 875559), this new contemporary restaurant in Bembridge, named after a famous New York fish market, prides itself on using local seafood and produce. Both floors of the restaurant feature work by established Island artist Charlotte Hodge-Thomas. Prices for fresh whole lobster start at around £22.

Around The Priory Bay Hotel

Each summer, the hotel opens the PRIORY OYSTER BAR (07974 431352), a restaurant with a white tented roof, set just above the beach in the woods. It serves barbecued food and fresh fish, depending on the catch of the day and of course, oysters (½ dozen £7.50, 1 dozen £12). Expect to pay from £20 for three courses plus wine.

Around The George Hotel

The George’s own Brasserie, in a sunny yellow room overlooking the sea, serves food in the garden when possible. Delicious starters such as crab & smoked haddock risotto and main courses using plenty of local produce. It’s not cheap: expect to pay around £30 for a three-course meal plus wine.

For a jolly old slap-up meal try SALTY’S (01983 761550), right next door, upstairs in an old boat house by the castle (it’s always full of yachties in the sailing season).

The New Inn

THE NEW INN, Shalfleet (01983 531314, www.thenew-inn.co.uk), is justly famed for its hearty meals and fresh fish of the day: half a pint of prawns costs £6.95 and there’s a creditable Island white wine called Rossiters at £3.25 a glass.

Around The Seaview Hotel

Braunstone HouseBRAUNSTONE HOUSE, 33 Lugley Street, Newport (01983 822994), occupies the downstairs floor of a Georgian hotel and French windows open onto a delightful walled garden. The food is great (from smoked trout and lime leaf marscapone bruschetta to apricot bread and butter pudding). Expect to pay from £25 for three courses plus wine.

BAYWATCH ON THE BEACH, St Helen’s (01983 873259), is a wooden building, heaving in summer, facing a long sea wall. The area between is full of umbrellas and tables and people sipping chilled white wine with their seafood. The ambience is slightly Aussie: easygoing, good grub, sunshine (you hope).

Around The Wellington Hotel

DRIFTWOOD BEACHBAR AND GRILL
(01983 404004, driftwoodbeachbar.com), is a chilled wooden café and restaurant right on the beach, with good value bar food and surfing stuff on the walls, extreme sports on the telly. Food’s served between 9am-9pm in high season and because it’s licensed you can take your drinks onto the beach. Closes in winter.

The Bonchurch InnTHE BONCHURCH INN (01983 852611, www.bonchurch-inn.co.uk), is tucked away in a little courtyard (you eat in the pub in winter, outside in summer) and is run by a really friendly family. The food is authentically Italian: the father is from Italy and does the cooking. One proviso: it’s very smoky if you eat inside, all the regulars seem to be puffing away.
