The Isle of Wight Gift Fair at Bembridge Sailing Club have pulled out the big guns this year as Lord Grade, the new peer of Yarmouth and media mogul extraordinaire, is opening the event tomorrow night, Friday November 25th at 5pm.
Baron Grade of Yarmouth has had a long and illustrious career in television, was Chairman of the BBC from 2004 to 2006 and executive Chairman of ITV from 2007 to 2009. In January this year he was created a life peer as Baron Grade of Yarmouth, was introduced in the House of Lords on 27 January 2011 and sits as a Conservative.
This is Lord Grade’s second ‘opening’ on the Island since becoming a life peer as he launched the Old Gaffer’s Festival in Yarmouth earlier this year. Islanders are looking forward to meeting him at this prestigious annual event where they will mingle, tucking into the wine and canapés that will be provided and hopefully buying lots of Christmas presents and delicious cakes, puddings and other Christmas fayre.
This Christmas Fair is the top end Christmas fundraiser on the Island and a high point in the social calendar to boot, raising money solely for charities on Island. Last year over £13,000 was raised and as usual half of the proceeds go the EM Hospice with the remaining half this year to be divided between the Ocean Youth Trust, Ryde Sea cadets, the IW Society for the Blind, Independent Arts and New Beginnings, which is the phoenix company rising from the ashes of Not Just Enterprises.
Entrance on Friday November 25th is £6.50 to include wine and canapés and the evening begins at 5pm and finishes at 8pm. On Saturday 26th November the entrance fee is £2.50 and it is open from 10am to 4pm with refreshments available and free parking on both days.
