The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was the final performance by Jimi Hendrix before his death a few weeks later in London. Although not the best performance – the set was unrehearsed and the sound was very poor, it was his last and for that reason it is remembered as a seminal point in music history. Within a year Hendrix, Jim Morrison & Janis Joplin had all passed away and many look back to the Isle of Wight Festival as ‘The Last Great Event’ of that era.

There is a memorial statue of Hendrix outside Dimbola Lodge in Freshwater Bay and a little room within the museum dedicated to the 1970 event that took place just up the road at Afton.
