Quarr Abbey

Quarr Abbey

A working Benedictine monastery, in a beautiful and peaceful setting; Quarr Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks who dedicate there life to prayer, contemplation and community life.

The Abbey has a fascinating history. Founded in 1132, the old abbey was dissolved more than 400 years later by Henry VIII. In 1907, the Solesmes order of Benedictine monks built the current monastery and church re made of red Flanders brick and combining French and Moorish architectural styles. Quarr Abbey was placed on the world monument fund list in 2012.

With free entry to the grounds, you can visit the church and pilgrim’s chapel, pop along to the art gallery and bookshop, or simply wander the grounds to experience the tranquil atmosphere of the monastery.

Located in the beautiful surroundings of the walled garden, you will find the Quarr abbey Teashop cafe and farm-shop, popular place to come and relax and enjoy refreshments, light lunches and shopping of local products and produce. Quarr Abbey has something to suit everyone.
