A permanent fixture in the summer social calendar, Cowes Week offers a fantastic experience for sailors and non-sailors alike. Held since 1826, this prestigious regatta attracts up to a thousand boats ranging from hi-tech super yachts to classic day boats. Thousands of spectators flock to Cowes each year to soak up the unique party atmosphere which culminates with a spectacular firework display on the Friday night.

Big, spectacular and noisy, the friday night firework display offers a fabulous finale to an exciting week of sailing. Set to music, the explosive show is best viewed from Cowes, or even from out on the water, perhaps on the ouside deck of a Red Funnel Ferry as you enjoy a long cool drink!

Didgheadradio Festival 2009

Held at the magical Calborne Water Mill in the picturesque West Wight, the weekend will showcase the best of contemporary didgeridoo playing from the UK and aborad. Musical activities will begin at 1200 each day with instrument workshops, busking around the site and performances from a wide range of artists featuring instruments such as the jaw harp, drums and throat singers.

Over 20,000 visitors are expected to attend, sampling the famous garlic sausages, garlic beer, and even garlic Ice Cream. The event also showcases the best of Island produce, plays host to the Wurzels, Alvin Stardust, remarkable circus performers and exotic animals, not to mention a huge beer tent and classic car show.

Often known as the Formula One of the Sea powerboat racing is an exhilerating spectator sport. The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes endurance race returns to the Solent along with the Honda F4SA series. With thrills on the water and plenty of shoreside enteratainment, this makes for a great day out for the whole family.

35th Island Steam show

The 35th Island Steam Show is the place to be for a perfect family Bank Holiday. There's bundles of fun with Bob Hogg and his sheepdogs as they herd geese, ducks and even Paxo the Chicken! Cheer as the Medieval Knights of the Crusade prove that the age of Chivalry is far from over - And boo at the villainous Black Knight! Climb aboard the traditional fairground rides and marvel at the beautifully maintained traction engines, vintage cars, motorcycles and old wagons. With steam train rides, stalls, country crafts, refreshments, Real Ale Festival and even a Red Indian encampment.

Set in the magnificent gardens of Wolverton Manor the annual Garden fair features stalls and horticulturAl displays from local and mainland nurseries, as well as a themed Elizabethan village complete with fantastical costumes, delicious food and magical musicians. The fair is run in aid of Age Concern and many other deserving local charities.

Robin Hill will once again come alive with the sound of music! Bestival devotees can expect another eclectic and inspired range of artists for 2010. The music is only part of what makes Bestival so magical. The family friendly atmosphere and weird and wonderful events and attractions such as the famous fancy dress carnival and the inflatable church helped make Bestival 2009 the "Best Medium Sized Festival" at the UK Festival Awards.

Isle of Wight Cycling Festival
18-26 September 2010, Island wide
The Cycling Festival returns for 2009 with its mix of events and activities to suit all ages and abilities. Hardcore cyclists can take their pick from the notorious Hills Killer Challenge; a gruelling orienteering mountain bike race against the clock, over 3, 7 or 14 hills, or attempt to "Cycle the Wight" a 65 mile road ride around the Island in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Alternatively, you can simply join in with one of many rides taking place all over the Island, and enjoy the stunning scenery from the comfort of your saddle.

Big Wight Matter
24-26 September 2010, Brighstone
Brainstrust, the brain cancer charity is organising a fundraising weekend in aid of brain tumour research. Big Wight Matter’s basecamp will be Brighstone Holiday Centre set amongst the stunning scenery of the west of the Island. There's sponsored walks, a quiz and a treasure hunt or simply enjoy the live music, barbecue and beer tent. All monies raised will go to brain cancer charities affiliated to brain tumour research.
