Mum's Memory Day
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a horrible disease. When someone you love is diagnosed it is difficult to understand why. Mavis Summerfield was one of life's true treasures. A loving wife, mother and grandmother who raised a caring family and had just celebrated her Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2001. Mavis and her husband Laurie had also decided to make the move to their beloved Isle of Wight to be nearer to their daughter Jennie who moved to the Island the previous year. So when Mavis was diagnosed with MND in February 2002 her family prepared for the worst. As Mavis was too ill to leave the mainland at that time she didn't have the benefit of the care and support from the Isle of Wight Branch of MND. The disease took hold very quickly and Mavis sadly died in March 2002.
Jennie and her sister Doreen, who moved to the Isle of Wight in 2002, decided to do something to help others living with MND. In the summer of 2004 the sisters had a stall at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice Antiques Fair and happened to notice another stall with the Isle of Wight MND committee raising much needed funds. During that afternoon the idea came to them to hold an Antiques fair specifically to raise money for MND and so 'Mum's Memory Day' was born!. The first step was to find a suitable venue and as they both lived in Northwood they started to look locally and the gem that is Northwood House was deemed the ideal venue.
From the onset all staff at Northwood House provided tremendous support to get this event up and running. Even during the many changes at Northwood House the event has always been well supported by its staff and visitors alike.
After the first fair in 2004 the sisters were invited to join the MND Committee by its President, Gloria Minghella. Committee members have provided hands-on support eversince by manning the entrance table, displaying posters and generally spreading the word to encourage friends and family to attend.
Fast-forward to 2015 and with a total of just under £10,000 raised from this event so far, the 11th fair is upon us. Already promising to be a great event in the Island Antiques calendar and as a vital fund raiser for the Isle of Wight (IOW) branch of MND. All money taken on the door on February 22nd will be donated directly to the IOW branch to help local people living with MND. The work of the IOW committee is outstanding in the support and care it offers to local people, their carers and families. Just by coming along on 22nd February and paying the admission fee your money will help someone like Mavis who doesn't deserve to have this dreadful disease either but needs our much needed support.
