Did you know there isn't a needle at the Needles? The name 'Needles' is derived from a tapering rock pinnacle formerly situated a little to the north of the present central rock. About 120ft high, it collapsed into the sea in 1764 with a crash heard for many miles around. The stump can still be seen at low tide.
