Thruxton Thrashing

06 January 2011

The Wight Mountain/Red Funnel Cyclo Cross Team, started the New Year with a bang, facing the toughest course of the season at the Thruxton race Circuit.  The course consisted of sections of hairpin turns going straight into steep climbs with another sharp hairpin bend at the top to drop you back down another steep hill and straight
into another climb, pushing the endurance levels of the riders to the absolute limits.

Robbie Bolwell riding in the under 16 category started the day with a stirling ride to achieve 5th place, being narrowly beaten by some very strong and talented oposition.

Karen Murphy rode extremely well, despite having a hand injury to achieve 3rd place. Nicky Volley came home for 4th place and Steve Dines had a great ride in the Vet 50 category to achieve a very respectable 5th place.

With one race to go the Team are lying in 6th place in the Wessex League, with Karen Murphy heading the Women'sleague standings.

Adam is English Expert Downhill Champion!

21 September 2010

Red funnel/Wight Mountain riders Adam Holleyman and Jason Morgan enjoyed a successful day at the English Downhill championships at cearsws in north Wales a couple of weeks ago. Adam put in a storming time to become English Expert champion. Whilst Jason came in 5th in senior after no practice runs due to a crash the day before in qualifing.
The following weekend the pair went to UK Bike Park for round 4 of the summer series where they had mixed fortunes Adam took another win and the fastest time of the day but unfortunately, Jason whilst pushing hard for the win crashed out again breaking his arm.

Going downhill in 2010....Fast!

Team Wight Mountain/Red Funnel downhill rider, Adam Holleyman has started the season with a bang, gaining 1st place at the UK bike park winter series on 28th February 2010 and securing 2nd place in the first round of the Cearsws Cup in Wales on 8th March 2010.

Adam has been working all winter to fund the season’s training and travel to various events including upcoming races in the Portuguese National, Maxxis International Cup, UK Nationals and National Championships.  He is working hard to secure UCI World Cup points and with 8 already under his belt he only has 12 more to gain in order to enter the Mountain Bike UCI World Cup, which starts in May 2010.

Adam would like to thank Wight Mountain Bike Shop and Red Funnel Ferries for their ongoing financial support in helping him to realise his goals for the year!

Trans-Alp Mountain Bike Race 2009

Wight Mountain/Red Funnel riders Sam and James Hunt returned from the 8-stage Trans-Alp mountain bike race from Germany to Italy.

With the 1st stage cancelled due to heavy snowfall, fog and sub-zero temperatures, the pair were eased into the event with a shortened 2nd stage.

Each stage had a massed start with almost 1200 riders heading off to the sound of AC/DC’s ‘Highway to hell’.
Endurance was as important a consideration as speed to ensure survival and with most stages having over 3000m of climbing, the terrain was mirrored somewhat by the contrast of emotional and physical experiences of the riders, both enjoying and enduring the challenges, scenery and experience of this epic event:  3-hour long climbs up countless hairpins with temperatures in the high 40’s, wide open mountain top tracks and hair-raising descents at speeds of up to 60 mph!

With a total of 584 teams starting, 446 finished. TEAM WIGHT MOUNTAIN RED FUNNEL crossed the finish line in Riva Del Garda 79th in Cat. 331st overall.
