News Release 25-09-2008

The Isle of Wight, the place to be in 2009!

The Isle of Wight caught everyone’s eye this year with sensational festivals and a spectacular events calendar.  Next year is set to be bigger and better than ever.  Whether it’s food, music, or action, there’s loads to get excited about in 2009!

Here’s a taster of some of the key events for 2009;

Isle of Wight Walking Festival – 9 to 24 May 2009
In it’s 11th year this is the UK’s Largest Walking Festival offering something different for all tastes – from speed-dating walks to guided ghost walks, pub walks to heritage walks.  The event has become so popular that they have announced an additional event in late October.

Isle of Wight Festival – 12 to 14 June 2009
This award-winning legendary festival returns, with a line-up to be announced later this year. Previous artists include The Rolling Stones, The Who, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Police and many more festival exclusives.  Tickets sold out in record time for the 2008 event; don’t miss one of the highlights of the summer.

Garlic Festival – 15 & 16 August 2009 (TBC)

The Isle of Wight is the place to be for garlic lovers in August with the annual Garlic Festival taking place at the showground in the tiny village of Newchurch. First organised in 1983, this two-day festival has since grown to become one of the largest foodie events on the Island. No fewer than 25,000 people attend each year to sample the locally grown garlic as well as the festival ambiance.

Powerboat Festival – 29 & 30 August 2009 (TBC)

Fondly nicknamed "The Big One", the race started off in the 1960s and has become one of the oldest and most prestigious powerboat races in the world. Similar to Formula 1 car racing, the event has all the buzz and excitement of F1 but with the added thrill of taking place in the water.

Bestival – 4 to 6 September 2009

Bestival has quickly become one of the hottest music festivals worldwide, winning several awards including 2007’s Best Medium Sized Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards. The line-up is the most eclectic you’ll ever experience (2008’s acts ranged from Amy Winehouse to The Specials), and the campsite experience, complete with fancy dress carnival and Morris dancing, makes this a truly unique festival.

Isle of Wight Cycling Festival – 12 to 20 September 2009

Offering a range of events for all cycling disciplines from cross country mountain biking to road touring it is suitable for all ages and abilities. Hardcore cyclists can take their pick from the notorious Hills Killer Challenge; a grueling orienteering mountain bike race against the clock, over 3, 7 or 14 hills, or attempt to "Cycle the Wight" a 65 mile road ride around the Island in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight Specialist will be offering tickets to all the key events as soon as they are released.  Ferry travel from Southampton is available to purchase for 2009 with some great savings to be made. Why not beat the rush and secure your crossings early?
