Pearl Izumi Cycle Tour Series heads to Bicycle Island

12-05-2015 – To mark the first round of the Pear Izumi Cycle Tour Series which comes to Ryde for the first time on May 14, Red Funnel is offering cheap fares to cycling fans who want to see the top teams battling for the top spot.

Ryde will be transformed into a race circuit for the country's top cyclists as the first round of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series speeds into town. Spectators will be treated to two chances to see Britain's fastest teams in action. A team time trial over two laps of the circuit opens this round of the series and the racing then begins in earnest at 7:30pm for approximately two hours.

For day visitors, Red Funnel is offering day return foot passenger fares of just £9.20 per person between Southampton and East Cowes. Those wanting to cycle to Ryde can bring their bikes on the ferry for free or if they prefer to travel on the bus there is a direct and regular service between East Cowes and Ryde. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the ticket office on departure.

Cycling fans who want to watch the Peal Izumi event and stay on for the weekend to explore ‘Bicycle Island’ are being offered 15% off Red Funnel’s car ferry fares if travelling outward from Southampton between 13-15th May and returning by the 19th May.  To book this offer visit

The Isle of Wight offers everything from extreme chalk-ridge tracks for mountain bikers, to family-friendly rail trail cycling where you can spot the Isle of Wight’s famous Red Squirrels along the way. For the ultimate Island challenge visitors can take on the Round the Island Cycle Route – a 100km waymarked course that weaves around the coast of the Isle of Wight. Smash it in a day if you’ve got the legs for it, or take a few days with stop-offs along the way and soak up some of the beautiful Island countryside.

If bringing their own bikes, cyclists can take advantage of bag transfer services, and cyclist-friendly accommodation, and if preferring to travel light there are loads of places to hire a road or mountain bike.

Jonathan Green, marketing and communications director at Red Funnel, said: "The Isle of Wight or ‘Bicycle Island’ as it’s become known, offers some fantastic routes and trails and Lonely Planet recognised it as one the world's top ten cycling destinations. We are therefore delighted that it was selected to host the first round of the 2015 Pear Izumi Tour Series and we look forward to welcoming cycling fans from across the south.”

Crowds of spectators, celebrities and TV cameras are expected to line the route, which will take in Ryde's picturesque Victorian streets, the beautiful shoreline and a tough climb up Union Street. Community events for both children and adults start from 12:30pm and the race proper begins at 7:30pm.
